Should military conscription be banned?
Back to question

Military service can cause long-lasting health problems

Several conscripts are not mentally or physically able to withstand training, and the law often does not account for this

The Argument

A modern-day draft would entail that everyone must serve— even those who may not be physically or mentally capable of doing so. Mental illness is even less accounted for by law. Instead, exemption boards seem to hold onto the opinion that if it cannot be seen, it does not exist. It may be impossible to tell if someone will be psychologically damaged by military service before they are drafted.

Counter arguments

This does not mean that military conscription should be banned, simply that more rigorous health tests should be in place to prevent those who are not fit for it from being conscripted. Military service actually has health benefits. Most veterans report good physical health later in life which was developed during military service.[1]
